Bromley Removals
Removals Bromley: Moving Houses, Flats And Offices Across BR1 And BR2
Croydon covers a lot of ground, and a move here can mean two very different days. One job is a tenth floor flat off Wellesley Road with a single goods lift booked in slots by the concierge. The next is a 1930s semi on a Sanderstead hill with a gravel drive and no turning room. Elephant Removals has moved people across South London since 2003. We handle house removals in Croydon, flat moves, office relocations and single item jobs from Norbury down to Coulsdon, with the parking sorted before the van sets off.
Moving Day Here
Wide Suburban Streets, Then Two Zones Where You Cannot Even Stop
Most of this borough is kind to a removals crew: driveways, garages, generous verges, roads laid out when cars were rare. Plenty of jobs in Hayes, Bickley or Keston come down to reversing onto a drive and getting on with it. Then you reach the town centre and the rules change sharply. Bromley North Village and Orpington High Street are both Restricted Parking Zones, where no waiting and no loading applies except in a signed bay, with no yellow lines painted to warn you.
Outside the town centre controlled parking zone, many streets have no controls at all. That sounds easier, and usually it is, but the kerb outside your door is then first come first served. Half the value of using a removal company in Bromley that works these roads is knowing which situation applies before the van leaves the yard.
Areas We Cover
From Sundridge Avenue To Hayes Lane: The Pockets We Load In
Sundridge Avenue and Hayes Lane sit four miles apart and behave nothing alike on moving day. One is a conservation area of tall period houses with narrow frontages; the other a busy B road where stopping outside the house is the problem.
Bromley North Village & East Street
The Restricted Parking Zone, where loading is legal only inside a signed bay, and those bays are marked by paving changes rather than paint. We apply for a suspension here as a matter of course.
Town Centre & Market Square
The High Street here is pedestrianised, entered only from the Elmfield Road end through a retractable bollard run by the council’s CCTV team. Flats above the shops need a Vehicle Access Permit, and Thursday to Saturday the market takes the space anyway.
Sundridge Park & Plaistow
Period houses on Sundridge Avenue and Madeira Avenue, narrow frontages and long front paths. Burnt Ash Lane carries steady traffic, so we load from the side roads.
Bickley & Widmore
Large detached houses on Mavelstone Road, Page Heath Lane and the roads off Chislehurst Road, often gated, with gravel drives and tight turning circles. We check turning space before confirming; reversing a 7.5 tonne van out of a private road is nobody’s idea of a start.
Shortlands & Valley Road
Victorian villas on South Hill Road and Valley Road, built for merchants who wanted space: good for furniture, bad for staircases. The gradient matters, so we park facing the right way to keep the tail lift level.
Bromley Common & Hayes
1930s semis along Hastings Road and the Hayes roads, mostly with driveways, so among the easiest jobs we do. The catch is the A21 cutting through as a red route, where stopping is never permitted.
Property Types
Period Villas And Town Centre Apartments: What Access Actually Looks Like
Four building types cover most of what we move here, and each fails in its own way if nobody checks first.
Victorian and Edwardian villas
Tall rooms, generous landings, then a staircase that turns twice with a fixed newel post at the bottom. Wardrobes that went in forty years ago often went through a window.
We measure the turn, not just the doorway, and carry the kit to dismantle wardrobes and beds properly.
1930s semis and mock Tudor houses
Driveways sloping towards the garage, side returns barely a metre wide, loft stairs steeper than current regs allow. Garage conversions are common here, which usually means twenty years of boxes where the parking was.
We load off the drive where the gradient allows, bring a ramp where it does not, and clear loft rooms first.
Town centre apartments
The blocks around Bromley South and Ringers Road have concierge desks, goods lifts and underground car parks with height barriers no Luton van clears. Lift slots go fast on Fridays and at month end.
We contact the building manager, book the lift and loading bay, and send the paperwork they want. If the van cannot clear the barrier, we shuttle.
Detached houses on private and unadopted roads
Gravel drives, electric gates and roads the council does not maintain, common around Bickley, Keston and Downe. Turning space is the limiting factor, not the house.
We study satellite imagery before quoting and walk it where it is marginal. Better to plan a shuttle than find out at 8am.
Parking & Permits
Bromley Council Bay Suspensions: Three Working Days, Portal Only
Bromley is one of the more reasonable London boroughs on this. The council wants applications at least three working days before the suspension starts, through its permit portal, and assesses each one before approving, sometimes by sending an officer to the street. Weekends and bank holidays do not count. Full conditions are on the council’s own page: Bromley Council parking suspensions, conditions of use.
The details that catch people out:
- A suspension is not valid until the council confirms it by email, and every vehicle registration must be listed. A last minute van swap is a penalty charge waiting to happen.
- The council will not grant one just so you can park outside your own house. Suspensions run up to 14 days, then you reapply, to a maximum of four weeks.
- If somebody else parks in your suspended bay, that is not the council's problem, and enforcement takes time you will not have.
- Single yellow lines need a dispensation instead, which takes one working day. It does not cover permit bays, pay by phone bays, disabled bays or anywhere with a loading ban.
- Bromley North Village and Orpington High Street are Restricted Parking Zones. Loading outside a signed bay is not permitted there at all, lines or no lines.
- The A21 through Bromley Hill, Kentish Way, Masons Hill and Bromley Common is a TfL red route, as is the A232 between Locksbottom and West Wickham. Those applications go to TfL, not the council.
- Vehicles over five tonnes cannot park overnight on the borough's roads, which affects where a large van waits before an early start.
Arranging this is part of the job on removals in Bromley. Give us the address and we work out whether it needs a suspension, a dispensation, a Vehicle Access Permit or nothing, then apply early enough for it to come back confirmed.

Why Elephant Removals
Why Choose Elephant Removals In BR1 And BR2
Established in 2003
Over twenty years moving people across London, and long enough on Bromley removals to know a Shortlands staircase and a Bromley South goods lift are different problems. Experience shows up mostly as fewer surprises.
Access sorted before the date
We check the kerb, the lift and the turning space before confirming. Bay suspension, dispensation, High Street access permit, concierge paperwork: we submit and chase it.

Full Pack Or Crew And Van Only
Full pack through to crew and van only. One wardrobe from a flat above the High Street, or a seven bedroom house in Bickley with a piano. Both are ordinary weeks.

Common Questions
Bromley Removals FAQs
It depends on the street. Bromley Council asks for at least three working days’ notice to suspend a parking bay, applied for through its permit portal, and it is valid only once the council confirms it by email. Single yellow lines need a dispensation instead, which takes one working day. We work out which applies and apply for you.
All of the borough: the town centre, Bromley North, Sundridge Park, Plaistow, Bickley, Widmore, Shortlands, Bromley Common and Hayes across BR1 and BR2, plus Beckenham, West Wickham, Chislehurst, Orpington and Penge.
Yes. The stretch between Market Square and Elmfield Road is a pedestrian area entered through a retractable bollard run by the council’s CCTV team, so access needs a Vehicle Access Permit arranged in advance. Thursday to Saturday the Charter Market occupies the space, so we schedule those moves for another day.
Yes. We move offices across the town centre and the wider borough, including evening and weekend moves where the building allows. IT equipment, filing, desks and seating are all handled, and we deal with building management on lifts and loading bay access.
A fortnight is comfortable, particularly at month end when completions cluster. Shorter notice is fine, but if your street needs a bay suspension the council’s three working day minimum sets the floor.
