Will It Fit? Measuring Furniture Before Your London Move
Almost every furniture job that goes wrong in London goes wrong for the same reason: nobody measured the route. Ten minutes with a tape measure before you book saves a wasted booking, a damaged doorframe, or a sofa sitting on the pavement. Here is exactly what to measure and why.
Measure The Opening, Not The Door
Measure inside the frame with the door standing open, then take off anything that intrudes into the gap: the handle, the hinges, a door that only swings to eighty degrees before it hits a radiator. In a lot of London conversions the usable opening ends up several centimetres narrower than the doorway looks.
If you are within a centimetre or two, lifting the door off its hinges is a two-minute job and frequently reclaims exactly the margin you need. Our crews do this as a matter of course when a piece is borderline.
Diagonal Depth Is The Number That Decides It
For sofas and armchairs, width and height are not the figures that matter. Diagonal depth is — the straight-line distance from the top back corner down to the front bottom edge, measured as if you had drawn a line across the side profile.
Hallways, Turns And Staircases
A doorway that clears is only half the route. In a Victorian terrace the real pinch point is almost always the turn at the foot of the stairs, where a narrow hall meets a newel post. A piece needs room to swing, not just room to pass, so measure the hallway at its narrowest and then measure the clear floor space in front of the door.
On stairs, check headroom at the half-landing and the width between the banister and the wall. Loft conversions and basement flats deserve a second look — the last flight is often tighter than the first.
Lifts, Landings And Communal Doors
In purpose-built blocks, measure the lift car and the lift doorway as two separate numbers. A car can easily be deep enough for a wardrobe while the door aperture is not, which is the single most common surprise we meet in London flats.
Worth checking too: whether the lift has a removable ceiling panel for long items, whether the building wants the lift booked or padded in advance, and whether the communal entrance door has a closer that needs propping. Concierge buildings often have their own rules about move times.
When A Piece Genuinely Will Not Fit
Sometimes the numbers just don't work, and it is far better to know a week early than on the morning. The usual answers are further dismantling, taking internal doors off along the route, or occasionally a hoist through a window or balcony — that last one is specialist work and needs arranging well in advance, not improvised on the day.
One honest warning while we're here: flat-pack furniture built from chipboard and cam-lock fittings does not always survive a second dismantle. Older wardrobes and cheaper bed frames can lose their grip once the screws come out of the same holes twice. We'll tell you if we think a piece is at that stage before we touch it, and you can decide whether it is worth moving.
