Chiswick Removals
Removals In Chiswick, W4
Chiswick packs a lot into one postcode. Riverside cottages you can only reach on foot, Arts and Crafts houses with staircases that turn twice before the first landing, mansion flats with a porter who wants the lift booked, and a high road with a bus lane down the middle of it. We have been moving households and offices around West and South West London since 2003, and every Chiswick job starts with the same two questions: where can the van legally stand, and how far is the carry to the door?
Moving In W4
Why Moves In W4 Need Planning Around The Kerb And The Tide
Most of Chiswick went up between the 1870s and the 1930s, on streets laid out for handcarts rather than for a Luton with a tail lift. Add camera enforced access zones south of the high road, a tidal river that still puts water across Chiswick Mall on the big tides, and resident bays that fill by seven in the evening, and the plan matters more than the muscle.
None of that is a problem if it is dealt with in advance. It becomes one when a crew arrives to find the nearest legal stopping point ninety metres away. We survey the access at both ends before the date is confirmed, and we apply for the parking ourselves.
Streets We Know
Coverage From Bedford Park To Strand-on-the-Green
A move on Thames Road and a move on Turnham Green Terrace are two different jobs on the same day rate. One sits inside an access only zone with signs at both ends; the other is a busy high street with a bus lane and loading bays that half of Chiswick is already queuing for.
Bedford Park, The Avenue and Priory Gardens
Norman Shaw’s garden suburb is a conservation area and it shows at the kerb. Mature street trees sit close to the carriageway, limiting where a high sided van can pull in. The houses are generous inside; the hallways are not.
Glebe Estate, Devonshire Road and Glebe Street
Tight Victorian terraces on narrow streets, most with no front garden and no off street parking. A suspended bay outside the door is close to essential, because the alternative is a carry past three or four houses.
Grove Park, Hartington Road and Staveley Road
Large houses with long front paths, so the walk in is further than the postcode suggests. Both roads carry camera enforced access restrictions, so the route in matters as much as the parking.
Strand-on-the-Green and Thames Road
The access only zone between the Kew Bridge junction and Grove Park Road runs 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Houses fronting the towpath have no vehicle access at all, so everything is barrowed in from the nearest road and timed around the tide.
Old Chiswick, Chiswick Mall and Church Street
Listed houses on a lane that still floods on spring tides, the water sitting across the road for an hour or two. We check the tide tables when we book a Mall address. Narrow frontages and original staircases throughout.
Turnham Green Terrace and Chiswick High Road
Flats above shops, single staircases, and a 20mph high road with camera enforced bus lanes. Loading bays are shared with every delivery driver in W4, so we book early and clear the heavy items before the shops open.
Property Types
Period Houses, Mansion Flats And Everything Above A Shop
Four building types cover most of what we move here, and each goes wrong differently if the access is not checked.
Victorian and Arts and Crafts houses
The staircase is the constraint, not the front door. Half landings, a turn at the bottom and original balustrades that cannot take a knock mean wardrobes and king size divans rarely come down in one piece.
We measure the turn on the survey, dismantle on site, and protect the banister and treads. Where the stairs beat us, we can take an item out through a sash window.
Flats above shops on the high street
One narrow staircase from a street door, no lift, and a loading bay twenty metres away that is usually taken. Deliveries to the shops below start early, so a late start becomes a long carry.
We book the earliest window available, suspend a bay or apply for a yellow line waiver, and run a relay so nobody carries the full distance.
Mansion blocks and purpose built flats
Managing agents want notice, a lift booking and documents on file before the goods lift is released. Some blocks restrict moves to weekdays and set an afternoon cut off.
We contact the agent once the date is set, send whatever paperwork the block asks for, and confirm lift dimensions.
Riverside cottages and listed properties
Bollards, footway only frontage, cobbles and tidal flooding. At Strand-on-the-Green and along the Mall the van cannot reach the door, and there is no way around that.
We barrow the distance with covered trolleys, work around high water, and add packing to anything crossing cobbles. Listed interiors get full floor and door frame protection.
Parking And Permits
Bay Suspensions, Camera Zones And The Ten Working Day Rule
Chiswick sits in the London Borough of Hounslow, and Hounslow asks for at least ten working days notice before it will suspend a parking bay for a house move. That is the most common reason a move here gets awkward, because ten working days is a fortnight once weekends are counted, and most people book later than that. Full details and the application form are on the council’s own page: Request a parking suspension in your area, London Borough of Hounslow.
Things that catch people out in W4:
- Ten working days is the minimum, not a safe margin. Emergencies are considered, but you have to evidence why the standard notice could not be met.
- If there is no bay outside, you can apply instead to park on the single or double yellow lines. Separate application, and the council wants evidence of the location.
- A suspension does not exempt a van from a camera enforced access zone or a bus lane. Different rules, enforced separately.
- The cones go out early or not at all. A suspended bay with a resident's car still in it at 8am helps nobody.
- School Streets close several roads in south Chiswick at drop off and pick up.
We handle the application as part of the booking. Give us the address and the date and we will say whether a suspension is realistic, whether a waiver is the better route, and what either does to the timings.

Why Elephant Removals
Why Households In W4 Book Us
Established in 2003
Over twenty years moving people across West and South West London. We have carried furniture down Bedford Park half landings and along the towpath at Strand-on-the-Green often enough to know what fits and what comes apart.
Access sorted before the date
We survey both ends, apply for the suspension or waiver ourselves, contact the managing agent and confirm lift dimensions. The plan exists before the van is loaded.
Insured moves
Goods in transit and public liability cover, with documents sent to your building manager where a block wants them before releasing the goods lift.
Whole houses or one item
Crew and van only, part pack or full pack. A single wardrobe out of a Devonshire Road flat and a five bedroom house on Staveley Road are both a normal Tuesday.

Common Questions
Chiswick Removals FAQs
Yes. Hounslow needs at least ten working days notice to suspend a bay, so we apply as soon as the date is confirmed. Where there is no bay outside the property, we apply for permission to park on the yellow lines instead, which is a separate application and needs evidence of the location.
Yes, and we plan those jobs around the tide. Chiswick Mall still floods on high spring tides, and the riverside frontage at Strand-on-the-Green has no vehicle access, so we barrow in from the nearest road with covered trolleys and allow extra time for the carry.
Two to three weeks is comfortable for a full house move, mostly because of the ten working day parking rule rather than our diary. We do take same week bookings, but the parking options narrow once you are inside that window.
We do. Chiswick Business Park, offices along the high road and the studios near the Great West Road are all regular work. Most set their own move windows and want the goods lift booked, so we deal with building management directly.
It happens regularly in Bedford Park and the Glebe Estate terraces. We measure the turn during the survey and dismantle what we can. Where an item genuinely will not make it, we have the equipment to take it out through a window opening.
Yes. Containerised storage with the same crew handling collection and redelivery, which is usually simpler than moving twice. Tell us roughly how long the gap is and we will quote the move and the storage together.
