Moving day is approaching fast and you realise you’re unable to cope with any further packing. Are there enough packing supplies? What about those fragile and family valuables?
Think ahead and initiate preparation from the moment you note you’re going to be moving and reduce the potential for disaster on your moving day with our moving hacks!
You should have confirmed your actual moving date by now and thus finalise your removal booking. Now is the time to start packing up china and small items if you have decided to do so yourself. Make sure you have enough boxes and packaging materials; it is very easy to underestimate the number of bits and pieces that come out of cupboards and drawers. Do a little each day starting with the least used items (see advice on packing).
Access to and from the doorway of your homes is critical; please advise your neighbours in advance that a removal vehicle will be parked outside your home. If parking permits are required, this is your responsibility as no removal companies will take this responsibility.
Our moving team is not allowed to enter a loft unless it is properly cleaned dust free, illuminated, floored with a fixed ladder, and has a safe point of entry. If this is not the case the contents of attics/lofts should be sorted and placed in a convenient area prior to the arrival of our moving team.
Stack all cartons also create a clear, unobstructed path to prevent the possibility of tripping. When possible disassemble beds, remove mirrors from dressers or walls etc. Do these things if needed as they are time and money savers.
Items that you will need immediately upon arrival at your new property such as a kettle etc, should be placed in a box/carton and clearly marked "Load Last".
Although it is the most logical day for moving, try and avoid moving on a Friday as this could save you money. This is because you could experience delays regarding transaction of funds, broken chains etc, which usually results in having to wait until Monday to sort out. The worst may not end here – you may find that the removal vehicle is full of your personal belongings with nowhere to go.
This normally results in having to pay for storage and another day of removal costs. Your removal firm may also not be available on the following Monday. It is your choice; think twice.
Parking for removal trucks near your residence should be easily accessible for the purpose of removals. Do whatever you can and reserve parking for your movers. Remember the moving vehicle cannot block the street. Also, if the movers have to walk an extra distance with your furniture and belongings, the overall move will be delayed and may cost more.
If you have yellow lines or parking bays outside your property, parking may be a problem. Parking dispensation will be required. It is your responsibility to be present throughout the removal to ensure that nothing that to be removed is left behind and nothing is taken away in error, and to also ensure if there’s any item which requires an extra care or any item which may not require packing at all.
Our moving company may be unable to carry out your move appropriately without good access to all concerned premises. Please make sure that you have spoken to your neighbours if needed, and where necessary, arrange to leave parking places clear. Also, all walkways, pathways, stairs and passages should be clear of any obstruction to allow us free movement into the property.
Kids are always excited by the idea of moving and you may want them to be present, but please make sure they are well supervised, and stay out of the movers way.
Should your old property be left empty for a period of time, please ensure that everything is turned off, and the windows, doors, taps are closed, and the alarm is on. Also ensure there’s no leak from the disconnected area of your appliances, and everything is safe, and that you pass the keys to the right person or place if required.
Please advise us well in advance of potential problems and special needs, such as clothing wardrobes, extra cartons, last minute packing, etc.

Do a walk-through of each residence from which you are moving after the truck has been loaded with its contents. Double-check all cabinets, drawers, and basement, garage or storage lockers to ensure everything has been taken. Make sure you have all the hardware to disassemble the pieces. Look at all inside or outside places where things been left sitting (including windowsills). Be absolutely certain that everything has been loaded onto the truck before releasing the moving crew to the next location.
Hazards should be noted ahead of time. You should advise your mover of damaged or fragile furniture, weak or broken stairs, or impediments which may affect the move.
